📘 Topic Summary

Mechanics is the branch of physics that studies motion and the forces that cause it, built on Newton's three laws. The first law (inertia): an object keeps its state of rest or uniform motion unless acted on by a net force. The second law: F = ma — net force equals mass times acceleration. The third law: every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

Kinematics describes motion with displacement, velocity, and acceleration. Key equations for constant acceleration: v = u + at, s = ut + ½at², v² = u² + 2as. On velocity-time graphs, the slope gives acceleration and the area under the curve gives displacement — the most common exam graph question.

Mechanics dominates AP Physics 1, A-Level Physics, and university entrance exams worldwide. Classic problem types include projectile motion, inclined planes, friction, circular motion, and momentum conservation. Drawing a free-body diagram before writing any equation is the single best habit for solving force problems.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What is Newton's second law?

F = ma: the net force acting on an object equals its mass multiplied by its acceleration.

What does the area under a velocity-time graph represent?

It represents displacement — the total change in position over that time interval.

What is a free-body diagram?

A sketch showing all forces acting on a single object, used to set up Newton's second law equations correctly.
